This past weekend I had the pleasure of visiting Mike’s Kitchen in Bryanston for lunch. I have heard many people recount childhood memories of birthdays and lunches spent at Mike’s Kitchen and upon arriving and looking around, I quickly understood why everyone speaks so fondly of this place.

Established in 1972, Mike’s Kitchen has been a staple for countless families in South Africa because family is part of their values. Mike’s KItchen intends to create a space where families, big and small, feel like they can kick back and relax with good food and good company.

The restaurant has a fun American diner aesthetic, with its checkered floors and printed posters on the walls and use of red and black across the establishment. It is also considerably large, inside and out, with a large children's play area, backyard and event venue all in one place!
My favourite spot was the backyard, the big tree in the middle of it felt very homey and it felt like you could be in your backyard at home. I also liked the custom water feature with the big M, it makes a subtle statement.
Like I said, this restaurant is all about family which is why across the kids play area is an outdoor area for parents to enjoy their meals while keeping a steady eye on the little ones without hassle. A very thoughtful design, I felt.
And now of course, let’s get into the food. Mike’s Kitchen specialises in grilling, did you know they were the first steakhouse to serve spare ribs AND they have a secret marinade? Well that meant I had no choice but to try them out because I love myself some good meat. For starters we had chicken livers and calamari. The chicken livers were absolutely delicious, they had a slight kick to them which made them all the more tasty and the bread was soft and fresh. The calamari was also well-prepared, it wasn't too chewy or greasy which was lovely.
For mains, I got the ribs and wings combo whilst my partner got their Tomahawk steak and both were really great, I just wish the wings had a bit more sauce to really hit the spot.
The portion sizes are nice and generous, I couldn’t even finish my mains because of how full i was!
Overall, I think Mike’s Kitchen is the perfect place to take your family for some downtime and enjoy a good meal at an affordable price and simply relax. If it's been a minute since you’ve gone to Mike's Kitchen, this is your sign to take a trip down memory lane and remember why this restaurant is such a legend.
